Ebook About
From Ron Marz, Darryl Banks and Romeo Tanghal comes GREEN LANTERN: KYLE RAYNER VOL. 1, collecting the classic Green Lantern adventures long out of print! Hal Jordan had been Earth’s Green Lantern—a proud hero in an even prouder tradition. But even heroes have their limits, and when his hometown of Coast City was destroyed by Mongul, Hal Jordan reached his. When the Green Lantern Corps’ creators refused Hal the power to change the past, something inside him snapped. He crossed the line he had sworn he never would, and stripped the Guardians of the Universe and their legendary Green Lantern Corps of every shred of power they had, killing many of them in the process. He became a man consumed with his own rage, and an era of heroism ended. The ring and legend of the Corps, however, would not be extinguished. The lone surviving Guardian has come to Earth and bequeathed the final power ring to a young man named Kyle Rayner. With it, a new chapter in the legacy of Green Lantern has begun. But this time, there’s no one to train the new bearer of the ring, and he must learn to wield it in a trial by fire against some of the DC Universe’s most powerful threats! For the first time ever, this volume collects GREEN LANTERN #48-57, NEW TITANS #116-117 and R.E.B.E.L.S. #1.

Book Green Lantern: Kyle Rayner Vol. 1 (Green Lantern (1990-2004)) Review :

It feels weird that I'm a big Green Lantern fan, and yet it took me so long to get to Kyle's run. I'm glad I waited, because this trade is just gorgeous and I can't wait to have every single one of them on my shelf and expanding my love of this character. Like many recent collected runs DC is trying to give fans the ultimate experience of reading every issue these characters appear in, as well as their smaller roles in other titles. While I find Ron Marz' GL title to be the best and Kyle's guest appearances in REBELS and New Titans to be okay I am happy that I got to experience Kyle interacting with the DC universe slowly but surely.Vol 1 starts off with the infamous Emerald Twilight storyline where Hal's character takes a big character turn after witnessing a massive tragedy. I'm not a big Hal Jordan fan, and the set up they use to establish his changing status quo was enough for me to be alright with it. I understood where Hal was coming from, even though I thought it was paced rather fast, but I guess that's also like ripping off a bandaid for every Hal Jordan fan. It's happening, but only for a few issues. The Next storyline is my favorite of this bunch. It's Kyle learning about the Green Lantern ring, and mythos, and trying to see who he is. He has a fun tussle with Mongol, and he even meets Superman. This was a very nice foundation for the character where he's uncertain, in awe, and a bit confused at times, but having encouragement from Superman was very special. The rest of this volume deals with another certain infamous tragedy, this time related to Kyle, and his aftermath. I thought they handled the aftermath really well, and there's a really good single story issue near the end where Kyle meets another Green Lantern that's just heartbreaking. There is a lot to love in this run, unfortunately I found the beginning to be okay and the last four issues are guest appearances that I liked, but didn't find all that engaging.
Decided to get this despite hating trade paperbacks (TPBs) and wishing they did hardcovers (HCs) for these instead. Wanted to wait for DC to release more TPBs and then they skipped a bunch of issues in between Vol. 2 and Circle of Fire... *sighs*. Finally, I ended up deciding to grab all of the out of print (OOP) TPBs on eBay to do nearly complete custom bound omnibuses. Read about the key issues and fillers through various blogs and forums.Growing up in the 90's, Kyle Rayner was my Green Lantern. I've always liked the outfit and felt like he was a grounded character that I related to the most. I ended up joining the Air Force later, so I'd relate with Hal Jordan too but we can discuss that another time. As far as my experience with GL, it has been with Kyle Rayner in single issues of this run here and there and Grant Morrison's run on JLA, John Stewart in Justice League animated series, followed by Geoff Johns entire run which was amazing. It was nice to finally read the origin of Kyle. I didn't realize how much Parallax was in this. Had read this TPB in one sitting cause it was so good. Surprisingly, Darryl Banks art and Ron Marz story holds up well and has solid material to be adapted into the Green Lantern Corps HBO Max series.
